Last week it was revealed that around £12,000 worth of damage was caused to an innocent landlord’s property. Since the landlord discovered this he has hit out at them claiming the tenants are “disgusting”. And when you find out what damage had been done, you can certainly understand why…
Damage Caused
Karim Haji, the unfortunate property owner, collected the keys to his flat after his most recent tenants had moved out. He then entered his property to find absolute devastation inside. The tenants had left a trail of destruction behind whilst also leaving Mr Haji the bill to pay in order to sort the mess out and get the house in a habitable state once again. Mr Haji’s landlord insurance provider will no doubt be notified about the incident!
The damage caused has been reported as heavily soiled carpets that have were ripped from the floor, sofa cushions that were destroyed and wallpaper that was pulled off the walls.
In addition to that, they had left filthy pots and pans, takeaway litter, drugs paraphernalia and dirty clothing lying around the flat. The flat was covered in mess and rubbish from top to toe.
Police Involvement
Mr Haji, unsurprisingly, decided to get the police involved in matters. The state the flat was left in was simply unacceptable and Mr Haji has been speaking about the tenants that formerly lived in his flat. He was quoted saying the following: “These people are worse than animals, their dogs had soiled the place and they were living among it. I was absolutely sickened when I opened the door; the smell was bad enough to knock me back before I even saw the state of it.”
Mr Haji then went on to say: “They have absolutely no respect for anybody else’s property. It will cost me around £12,000 to put right again.”
This is an alarming example of tenants that mistreat a landlord’s property; however, incidents like this have been in the news before. If you’re a landlord, it may be worth checking your prospective tenants over thoroughly before letting them sign a contract.
