Landlords to Help the Young Homeless

Property investors with an interest in landlord insurance are being urged to help a northern council by providing housing for homeless young people in the area.

East Lindsey District Council (ELDC) are asking landlords in the area to attend a special presentation on the urgent needs of the young homeless in the region to be held in the Trinity Hotel in Louth. The council are urgently looking for all types of accommodation that would alleviate the problem saying private homeowners prepared to take in a lodger would fit the bill as would the more conventional bedsit or a room in Home of Multiple Accommodation.

John Upsall, a councillor at ELDC, stressed the urgency of the situation, saying “Often young people become homeless through no fault of their own and it’s important we give them an opportunity to get back onto their feet and live an independent life.

“The young people remain in the accommodation provided by the council until they have proved that they can manage all housing related matters, so they have experience of successfully managing their own tenancy. After moving into the landlord’s accommodation the council will continue to provide support to the young person.”

The council are by no means isolated in this problem with many local authorities all over the country finding housing for vulnerable adults is at a premium. However, housing the youngsters will have some benefits for landlords as in many cases the rental charges are dispersed through a direct payment scheme. The meeting will be held on 29th November starting at 6pm and landlords will be offered help and advice if they are interested in participating in the initiative.
